The Time Traveller’s Dance (2025)

A speculative residency on the island of Märket. In the 1500’s the tiny island appeared in the Baltic sea, a lighthouse was built on the wrong side of the border in the 19th century and so a uniquely “zig-zig'“ border line was created to keep the island equally distributed between the Swedish and Finnish nations. Large portions of it are underwater for much of the time, but every year both Swedish and Finnish officials walk the zig-zag border together to establish it’s position. I created a dance map of footprints in a combination of Swedish and Finnish Polska dance styles, so that the officials can dance together along and over the line. As they step back and forth over the border they will time travel back and forth by one hour GMT.

The island of Märket with it’s zig-zag border. The complete dance map almost too small to make out at this scale.

Polska dance steps with svikt (dipped knee) on every 2nd beat of a 3 beat sequence, and waltzing on every 2nd round, along the border line (pink).
